Welcome to Shaw Farming

The Shaw family has been farming land on the Bedfordshire-Hertfordshire border since at least the 19th century. The present parent company,T.C.Shaw & Sons, was formed by the late Thomas Cecil Shaw in 1956.The business is now run by his sons and grandsons with the next generation already involved.

The area farmed totals around 2000 hectares, with a mix of owned, tenanted and contract-farmed land. A wide range of soil types are found within a few miles of the head office, situated at Mortgrove Farm, Lilley. With soils ranging from heavy boulder clay to sand and gravelly loam and thin chalk, a mix of cultivation techniques is used. A full range of machinery is available giving the options of every type of crop establishment from heavy duty ploughing, to min-till, to direct drilling.

The tractor fleet is based on John Deere and JCB with a Quad Trac as the main power unit. All fertilisng and spraying is done with 2 Bateman 24m self-propelled sprayers. Two continuous flow grain driers plus on-floor drying have to deal with over 10,000 tonnes of wheat, malting barley, oilseed rape and beans.

Shaw Farming is committed to not just growing high quality crops but creating the ideal environment for the great numbers of wild birds and game birds on the farms. Countryside Stewardship and the Entry Level Scheme will target an increase in numbers of grey partridges, skylarks, lapwings and, hopefully, hares.
